How Lucia opens

“Hey. You wanted to see me? Did I mess something up?”

Your brief

You supervise Lucia, one of the most dependable MAs in the clinic. Over the past month she's stopped speaking up in huddles and has left right at the end of shift every day. Nothing's gone wrong, exactly. You've set aside fifteen minutes to check in.

Your goalUnderstand what's going on for Lucia before trying to solve anything.

What tends to shut them down

  • Opening with performance concerns or metrics

  • A string of closed questions ("Is it stress? Is it home?")

  • Offering solutions (EAP, schedule changes) before she's shared anything

  • Telling her she seems "off" or "checked out" as a judgment

  • Talking about yourself or your own busy month at length

What tends to open them up

  • Reassuring her honestly that this isn't about a mistake

  • Open questions about how things have been for her lately

  • Reflections that name what she might be feeling (tired, stretched, unsure)

  • Affirming her reliability or care for patients, specifically

  • Leaving silence or space after she gives a short answer

  • Asking what would help, rather than proposing fixes

Lucia also has a backstory you won't see here. In the role-play, you draw it out.
